If your CCTV system records clearly during the day but shows a black screen, washed-out white, or blurry image at night, you're not alone. Night vision problems are the most common CCTV complaint we diagnose across Abu Dhabi villas and offices. Here are the 8 most frequent causes and the fix for each one.
1. IR LEDs are blocked or dirty
CCTV cameras produce infrared light invisible to the human eye to illuminate a scene at night. If the small ring of IR LEDs around the camera lens is blocked by a spiderweb, dirt, paint overspray, or positioned directly against a wall, the illumination can't reach the scene. Fix: Gently clean the lens and IR LED area with a dry microfibre cloth. Ensure there's at least 20–30cm of clear space in front of the camera.
2. IR bounce-back from a nearby wall or surface
If a camera is positioned close to a white wall, glass panel or bright surface, the IR light reflects straight back into the lens, creating a washed-out or overexposed white image. This is extremely common with cameras mounted at the edge of a covered entrance pointing toward a white wall. Fix: Adjust the camera angle to point away from nearby reflective surfaces, or reposition the camera so the IR light hits the intended scene rather than bouncing back.
3. IR cut filter stuck in the wrong position
Camera lenses include an IR cut filter that switches automatically between day and night mode. If this mechanical filter gets stuck due to age, vibration or a manufacturing defect, the camera either stays in day mode (producing a blue/washed image at night) or night mode (producing a black-and-white image during the day). Fix: Briefly cover the camera with your hand to trigger the night-to-day switch manually, or tap the camera gently. If the filter remains stuck, the camera unit typically needs replacement.
4. Lens is dirty or fogged
Dust, moisture and salt air common in the UAE can build up on the outer lens dome, scattering IR light and creating a blurry or hazy night image even when the camera appears clean from a distance. Fix: Remove the dome cover and clean both the inner and outer surfaces of the dome with a microfibre cloth and lens cleaner. Even a small smear inside the dome can significantly degrade night vision.
5. Insufficient IR range for the scene
A camera specified with 20m IR range cannot produce a clear image of objects 40m away at night, regardless of other settings. This is a specification mismatch rather than a fault. Fix: Confirm the camera's rated IR range against the actual distance to the area you need to monitor. A longer-range IR camera or an additional supplementary IR illuminator is needed if the range is insufficient.
6. Recording scheduled settings don't include night hours
Some NVRs and DVRs are configured with motion-triggered recording schedules that were set up during daylight hours, with sensitivity settings too low to trigger on the slower movement typical of nighttime intrusions. Fix: Check the recording schedule in your NVR settings to confirm recording is active 24/7 or covers the hours you need. Also check motion sensitivity settings separately for nighttime versus daytime hours.
7. Hard drive full — oldest recordings being overwritten
If you're reviewing last night's footage and finding it missing, the hard drive may be full and the system has overwritten those recordings. This isn't a camera fault but a storage-sizing problem. Fix: Check available storage in your NVR settings. If the drive is consistently filling before your intended retention period, you need a larger drive or reduced resolution/frame rate. 8. Failing IR LEDs (camera aging)
IR LEDs degrade over time, typically after 5–8 years of continuous use. A camera that used to produce clear night footage but has progressively worsened is likely suffering from IR LED degradation. Fix: Test by placing a smartphone camera (which can detect IR light) near the camera and checking whether the LEDs glow purple/pink on the phone screen. No visible glow means the LEDs have failed and the camera needs replacement.
