Whether you just installed a single WiFi camera or a full multi-camera NVR system, the setup process for checking footage on your phone follows the same basic pattern. Here's exactly how it works.
If you have a standalone WiFi camera (like Imou)
- Download the manufacturer's app (Imou Life for Imou cameras) from the App Store or Google Play
- Create an account and follow the in-app pairing steps — usually scanning a QR code on the camera or its box
- Connect the camera to your home WiFi during setup
- Once paired, the camera appears in your app's device list — tap it anytime to view live footage
- Enable push notifications in the app settings so you get an alert the moment motion is detected, not just when you open the app
If you have an NVR system (like UNV)
- During installation, your NVR gets configured with remote access (most NVRs use a cloud ID / P2P system to connect without complex router configuration)
- Download the NVR manufacturer's viewing app on your phone
- Scan the QR code on the NVR or enter its device serial number to link your app to the system
- All connected cameras appear in a single grid view, and you can tap any individual camera to view full-screen
- Set up motion alert notifications per camera if you only want alerts from specific zones (e.g. the gate, not every camera)
If remote viewing isn't working
- Check the property's internet upload speed — this matters more than download speed for streaming video out to your phone
- Confirm the camera/NVR shows as "online" in the app — if it shows offline, the issue is at the property's network, not your phone
- Update the app — outdated versions sometimes lose compatibility with firmware updates on the camera/NVR side
- Restart the camera or NVR — a simple power cycle resolves a surprising number of connectivity issues
WiFi camera vs NVR: which is easier to view remotely?
Standalone WiFi cameras (like our Imou Cruiser SE+) are generally simpler to set up for remote viewing since there's no separate recorder to configure. NVR systems (like our UNV NVR301-08S3) take a bit more initial setup but give you a single app view across many cameras at once — worth it once you're past 4-6 cameras.

Frequently asked questions
Your camera or NVR needs an internet connection at the property (WiFi or Ethernet), but once footage is uploading, you can view it from your phone anywhere with an internet connection — home WiFi isn't needed on your end while you're out.
Basic live viewing and motion alerts are typically free with the manufacturer's app. Extended cloud storage (keeping footage in the cloud rather than on a local SD card or NVR) is often a paid add-on, but is optional — local storage works without any subscription.
Usually a weak upload speed on the property's internet connection, especially with multiple high-resolution cameras streaming at once. Reducing stream quality in the app settings or upgrading your internet plan's upload speed usually resolves it.
Yes, most apps (including Imou's) support adding multiple users or sharing device access, so more than one person can view and receive alerts from the same cameras.
