What is schema markup (JSON-LD)?

Schema markup is structured data added to a page's HTML that explicitly tells search engines what the content means — a business, an article, a product, a set of questions and answers — rather than leaving them to infer it. JSON-LD is Google's recommended format: a single <script> block placed anywhere in the <head> or <body>.

Why schema markup matters for rankings

Schema itself is not a direct ranking factor, but it is what unlocks rich results in Google Search — star ratings, FAQ dropdowns, business info panels and product pricing shown directly in the results. Rich results occupy more visual space and consistently improve click-through rate, which is one of the strongest indirect signals for a local service business trying to compete on page 1.

Which schema type should I use?

  • LocalBusiness — homepage and contact pages of any physical or service-area business.
  • Article — blog posts and guides.
  • Product — individual product/shop pages.
  • FAQPage — any page with a genuine, visible FAQ section (Google requires the marked-up Q&A to actually be visible on the page).

Always validate before publishing

After adding schema, test it with Google's Rich Results Test to confirm it's read correctly and eligible for rich results, and check Search Console's Enhancements reports over the following weeks for any errors.
