Why URL slugs matter for SEO

A URL slug is the final, readable part of a page's address. Short, descriptive, keyword-relevant slugs are easier for users to read and share, and give Google an additional relevance signal beyond the title tag and content.

Slug best practices

  • Keep it short — 3 to 6 words is usually enough to convey the topic.
  • Use hyphens, not underscores, to separate words.
  • Drop filler words (the, a, of, and) unless they change the meaning.
  • Avoid dates, version numbers, or anything that will make the URL stale within a year.
  • Never change a published, indexed slug without a proper 301 redirect — it will lose accumulated ranking signals otherwise.

Slugs for local service pages

For location-based service pages, include the service and area in the slug (e.g. /services/cctv-installation-abu-dhabi/) rather than the city alone, since exact-match phrase relevance in the URL still carries a small but real signal.

Frequently asked questions

Slugs are a minor ranking signal on their own, but a clear, relevant slug improves click-through rate and helps both users and search engines understand the page before clicking.

Always hyphens. Google treats hyphens as word separators but does not reliably treat underscores the same way, so underscore-separated words can be read as one long word.

Only with a proper 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one. Changing a slug without redirecting loses backlinks and accumulated ranking signals pointing at the old URL.

Most well-ranking slugs use 3-6 words. Long slugs stuffed with keywords look spammy and are harder to read or share.
